Launching you into a fantasy world where you are forced to hack and slash your way to victory, Dragon's Crown is the latest in the dying genre of aggressive hack-and-slash titles and is looking to reinvent the tired genre.
First Impressions: Whenever possible, we try to give our loyal website viewers the most video footage and most in depth unbiased reviews imaginable. Part of that development is our "initial impressions" where we offer up our first impressions of the title that we are playing. This gives our website visitors more of clear understanding of what to first expect out of the game when they initially pop it into their consoles. If you scroll to the bottom of the page in the Rent vs. Buy section of the review and do not see the "final impressions" assessment then it's safe to say that you are reading our initial impression of the game. Once the final impression is up, there will be no further video or review done to that particular title.
Final Impressions: The final impression is just that, our completed breakdown and overall thoughts on the game based off of our entire game playing time. You can locate the final impressions assessment in the "Rent vs. Buy" section of the review (always located at the very end of all of our reviews). Here you will be able to read our final thoughts on the title and also see any potential grade changes that were made to the game as well (higher or lower). Should a grading change occur, it will be clearly noted with the previous grade, the new grade, and why the change occurred. Although this approach is more time consuming and requires many more man hours, our entire goal has always been to provide the best and completely unbiased reviews possible and we feel that the inclusion of the Initial Impressions and Final Impressions sections will give you a better view of what to expect from a new game. All that we ask in return is for you to continue to support Krakrabbit.com by visiting the site and letting others know about our cause. Together we can supply our fellow gamers with the most impartial information so they can make an informed decision on whether to buy or rent this particular title.
A Tale Of Adventurers: The narrative of Dragon's Crown is one that will seem familiar to many old school gamers, as it revolves mostly around you coming to the town of Hydeland as an "adventurer" and looking to take on various dangerous challenges out in the world.Within the small town is a guild, shop, and more but generally the brunt of your adventuring will be done out in the world. Throughout the kingdom there are nine locations that are rife with a couple alternate routes and hidden rooms in addition to the main path as well as, of course, monsters and bosses that are begging to be smacked. The storyline tries to offer a passable explanation as to why you are going from this place to that place, doing favors for this person or that person, but as a whole it is easy to not only ignore the storyline, but that may even be a favorable option for gamers. The narrative is mediocre at best and while smaller time developer Vanillaware tried to put together a decent plot, it becomes painfully obvious fairly early on that there is little use paying attention to it.
Arcades Reincarnated: The actual gameplay of Dragon's Crown is likely to be very familiar to anyone who would consider themselves an "old school" gamer, as Dragon's Crown is essentially a 21st century version of classic brawling, hack and slash titles from the past...and pride itself on it.Dragon's Crown does not try to be anything more than it is, and what you see is what you get with this title. Revolving around mauling your way through swarms of enemies, the gameplay is taken straight from old (as) time titles like River City Ransom. For some, the gameplay will provide a strong sense of nostalgia but as soon as those reinvigorated memories fade of drinking Coke out of glass bottles and trying to beat the high score of your friends on the arcade machine, it will become very obvious that this is simply an old title.
Rent vs. Buy: The graphics are nothing special and quite honestly there are many games like Dragon's Crown that were made years and years ago, and continue to be made today by small time, indie developers. This is not a title worthy of the price tag associated with truly new releases and while this would fit in nicely on the online marketplace, there is little chance many will see eye to eye with the inflated value of Dragon's Crown.
