TimeShift!

The time-warping FPS that has spent many years in development hell and has undergone a couple redesigns has finally been released, but will it be worth the long wait?

First Impressions: Whenever possible, we try to give our loyal website viewers the most video footage and most in depth unbiased reviews imaginable. Part of that development is our "initial impressions" where we offer up our first impressions of the title that we are playing.

This gives our website visitors more of clear understanding of what to first expect out of the game when they initially pop it into their consoles.

If you scroll to the bottom of the page in the Rent vs. Buy section of the review and do not see the "final impressions" assessment then it's safe to say that you are reading our initial impression of the game. Once the final impression is up, there will be no further video or review done to that particular title.

Final Impressions: The final impression is just that, our completed breakdown and overall thoughts on the game based off of our entire game playing time.

You can locate the final impressions assessment in the "Rent vs. Buy" section of the review (always located at the very end of all of our reviews). Here you will be able to read our final thoughts on the title and also see any potential grade changes that were made to the game as well (higher or lower). Should a grading change occur, it will be clearly noted with the previous grade, the new grade, and why the change occurred.

Although this approach is more time consuming and requires many more man hours, our entire goal has always been to provide the best and completely unbiased reviews possible and we feel that the inclusion of the Initial Impressions and Final Impressions sections will give you a better view of what to expect from a new game.

Suit Two Fights Suit Two: As soon as you start up TimeShift, you will instantly realize how bad the "story" (if any) is. It has something to do with a Dr. (Dr Krone) that has stolen a time-traveling suit that allows the user to manipulate time.

You find out, and then steal the other beta time-suit to try to stop anything Dr. Krone is going to do... (Actually has done, but you are trying to reverse it) confused? You will be for the entire game.

The main aspect of TimeShift is the time-manipulation, and you can actually have a lot of fun with it. While you have the suit, you have the ability to reverse time, (but not your own death) stop time, and slow time.

You will find the most enjoyment (and annoyance) in the idiotic AI and how they react to your powers. One of the most enjoyable things to do to a foe is to stop time, steal his weapon, and then walk around in confusion until you blow him into chunky man-bits.

There are a lot more other "exciting" possibilities that you can try out on your witless opponents at no risk, but the game fails to capitalize on the time-manipulation aspect. Rather then challenge you with something creative, you will be forced to wade through the occasional "puzzle" that won't challenge you in any way.

Go There Do This: Other then the time aspect, TimeShift plays like any other linear, run-of-the-mill first person shooter. By far the worst thing about TimeShift though (besides the boring puzzles and the incredibly dull AI) is the uncreative objectives.

You will be forced to do things you haven't done in console generations such as running around the level looking for the switch (or lever) that will open the locked door on the other side of the level.

Rent vs. Buy: Although TimeShift has an amazing time-shifting aspect that had a ton of potential, and great visuals, those pros don't even compare to the cons. TimeShift has moronic AI, bundled with boring puzzles and virtually no difficulty.

Had TimeShift spend a little more time in development (strangely) for polish, this would've been a great game. I'm looking for a sequel that will hopefully do everything TimeShift 1 should've already done.

Also, TimeShift has an impressive Multiplayer that works a modified version of the time-manipulation into the game quite well. Instead of having the suit, you will be equipped with Chrono grenades that will allow you to slow, pause, or reverse time with them. When you throw the grenades, anyone within the blast radius will be affected.

There are a multitude of modes such as deathmatch and team deathmatch, one-on-one, capture the flag, and a few unique modes. King of time has you try to gain control of the time sphere, which makes the person who holds it impervious to time effects, allowing them to rack up kills with ease.

Another enjoyable mode is called meltdown madness. This is a team-based mode where you try to prevent the other team's machine from counting down by throwing Chrono grenades at it.

You can also create your own modes by using the multiplayer modifiers. These let you increase players' running speeds and jumping abilities, reduce gravity, or play alternate game types like rockets or snipers only, vampires, or last man standing, or a juggernaut type game.
